§ Brief overview of the Brandenburg federated state
Brandenburg is Germany’s federated state being large in territory, but thinly populated, its cities are few in number, while the forests, lakes and rivers are many. There are more than 3000 lakes there; the forests of Brandenburg are home to rare species of animals and birds, for example, Great Bustard (in German: Großtrappe), as well as to rare plants growing there. The world famous Spreewald (the Spree Forest) (in German: Spreewald) is a nature reserve, a favorite attraction for tourists, where, in the region of Lower Lusatia, there live the representatives of the Lusatian-Sorbian ethnic group, Sorbs (aka the Lusatians and Wends) (in German: Sorben).
Most of the industrial enterprises and factories of this federated state are located near Berlin, artificial materials production and trains manufacture among them. Forestry, tourism and electric-power production are also important for the economy of this federated state.

The population size in Brandenburg totals 2'494'648 people. Of these, 1'231'683 are men, which is 49.4 % and 1'262'965 are women or 50.6 % of the whole federated state population. The population density of the Brandenburg federated state is 84 people per 1 square kilometer.
